It's been a little over a year since I left a small stationery store in Chattanooga, Tennessee to start my own line of cards under the name Lost Art Stationery. I worked at that little shop for four years. Nearly every day someone would stop in and say, "Ooohhh...writing notes is such a lost art!"
It irked me.
Writing notes is not a lost art. We write every day! It's true that today's correspondence happens most often over email or social media, but we do write every day. The more we are inundated with emails, Facebook posts, tweets, and Instagram pics; the more we yearn for something else, something more, something tangible. The more our mailboxes become filled with spam and bills, the more we miss the personal messages of yesterday.
Remember when birthday messages came in the mail from a few, important, close friends? Today it seems nearly every one of the 1000+ friends we've managed to collect since the first days of Facebook want to wish us a happy birthday. It's difficult to know which messages are genuine and which are just because Facebook reminded them to celebrate with us...repeatedly.
We want our friends to take a moment from their busy days, write a personal note, put it in an envelope, and place it in the mailbox—whether the act requires planning to arrive on our exact birthday, a note of thanks for dinner or a gift, or just because—when was the last time you put a note of encouragement received over text message on the 'fridge?
The biggest obstacle to being more thoughtful, I've found, is convenience. Who has time to find a small stationery store (that's open when you're not at work), find a stamp (again, when exactly is the post office open), and place a card in the mail?
While it's true the name of my business is a tongue-in-cheek reference to an often (mis)used statement during my time in stationery retail, the idea of my venture was a subscription service to help remove the inconveniences of sending a quick note to someone.
A subscription to Lost Art Stationery gets you four cards a month, 4 stamps, and free shipping. Every month consists of a thank you card, a birthday card, and two other cards so you will never be without the perfect card, whether it be a get well soon, a father's day card, or a just because card.
We are all busy, but being the recipient of this simple act of thoughtfulness is enough to change someone's day.
Invest in the people you love. Send cards to the people who matter, every month.
Every month, for only $20, you'll receive everything you need to mark a special occasion, make an impression or just say hello. Build the most important relationships in your life and build a habit that lasts a lifetime.
Lost Art Stationery's designer—Chris Lykins—creates unique, sassy, sweet and beautiful cards every month. His unique wit combined with beautiful type design, illustrations and photography along with high-quality Crane paper make a serious impression.
